It’s probably happened to you. You’re driving along the road and PLOP – a bird flying overhead unloads on your windshield. Sure, it makes a mess, but could the results of a birdy bathroom break damage your windshield? That was a question raised on the radio show Car Talk.
The guys were stumped, so they pulled in their resident physicist Wolfgang Ruckner to discuss the plausibility of the bird bomb cracking the windshield. His analysis of the conundrum suggests that if all the stars align correctly, it MIGHT be possible, especially if it was a really big bird flying at a very high altitude. And the windshield was already under stress.
One commenter on the story noted that some birds eat small stones to help them digest their food, making the story a bit more plausible.
