You may have seen this ABC 20/20 report years ago that included a behind the scenes investigation of how many windshield companies perform windshield replacements. It highlighted some of the common mistakes installers make, such as not wearing gloves or improperly communicating safe drive-away times.
But there’s another mistake all the installers in that video make, and that’s what auto glass expert Bob Beranek calls the “wipers up” installation method.
The “wipers up” installation method involves leaving the windshield wipers and cowl pane in place when installing the replacement windshield.
If the wipers and cowl pane aren’t removed, the windshield can’t be properly placed onto the bead of adhesive that holds the glass in the vehicle’s frame. If the glass isn’t properly seated, it won’t be able to withstand the impact of an airbag in an accident or support the roof in the event of a rollover crash.
